This innovative restraint system protects passengers in a head-on impact by automatically adapting activation to the severity of the impact. Until now, airbags inflated simultaneously up to their maximum limit on impact, but with the AirBag Smart 2 they only activate the first of the two stages when impact is moderate. The bridles inside the bags guarantee that the maximum dimensions of the cushions are as non-invasive as possible for passengers. These sensors also control activation of the seat belt pre-tensioners.

The APR is a measure of how much a given loan will cost you in interest over a calendar year. The figure for the APR takes into account all of the costs associated with the loan, and standardises the way the rate is expressed. It’s the expression of the interest rate paid on the loan. When APR figures are quoted on promotional material, they will be accompanied by the term 'typical APR'. This is because stating the APR is a legal requirement, and the rate stated must be that which is offered to at least two thirds of the loan applicants that get approved for that loan, hence making it the ‘typical’ rate offered. You will see the APR changing if you alter the dial controls because elements such as the price, deposit, and the length of your agreement all have an effect on the APR.
ASR actually stands for ‘Anti Schlupf Regelung’ but we call it Anti-Slip Regulation (you may know it as ‘traction control’). Basically, ASR prevents wheels from spinning when pulling away. It also prevents aquaplaning on wet surfaces and enhances overall stability on bumpy surfaces, through tight bends where the inside wheel tends to spin, and on localised patches of oil or other substances that affect just one or two drive wheels.

A reduced rate is payable for cars with a smaller engine size. The tax payable on vehicles registered after March 2001 is based on a 7-band scale linked to carbon dioxide emissions. The DVLA Rates of Vehicle Excise Duty shows the range of rates payable. The Vehicle Certification Agency has a calculator that enables you to work out which band your vehicle falls into.

The leasing company retains ownership responsibility for the associated risks, and at the end of the contract the vehicles are returned to them.
A way for a company to finance vehicles. A company hires vehicles from a provider for a specified period, making regular monthly payments. This method is usually on the balance sheet.

With GAP insurance, if your car is written off you can cover the difference between what the insurance company will pay out on the car and the amount you owe the loan issuer. For example, if you still owe £1000 on the written-off car and the insurance company values it (and pays out at) £500, then not only are you £500 out of pocket, but you also no longer have a car. GAP insurance would ensure you are covered for the remaining £500.

A HP contract involves an initial deposit or down payment. You then 'hire' the car you are buying for a fixed period, during which you pay for it in monthly instalments, plus interest. The car is yours to ‘purchase’ at the end of the agreement. As the purchaser, you won't own whatever you're buying on HP until you complete the payments.

Negative equity means the amount of money you owe on a car is more than the car is worth. This can happen if you borrow more than the value of the car at the start of the agreement or if you don’t put down any deposit and/or take the finance out over a long period. Even if you sell the car on, you will still be left owing the money on the loan that you can’t cover with the sale of the car. PCP involves an initial deposit and then a series of monthly payments. There is also an agreement made at the beginning of what the car will be worth at the end of the contract: the Minimum Guaranteed Future Value (MGFV). The monthly payments are the cost of the vehicle after the MGFV and the value of your deposit have been deducted. At the end of your PCP, you can either pay off the MGFV and take ownership of the vehicle or hand it back. There may be restrictions on your annual mileage and you are expected to maintain the car to a high standard. We call this product Fiat i-Deal.

With sale and leaseback, depreciation is put onto the buyer of the fleet, and the company gets instant cash.
